John and Debbie Guedry

Bank of Nevada

John and Debra Guedry have worked tirelessly over the past 30 years to create better opportunities for students in our community. In particular, they have focused on working to improve policies that allow students living in low-income communities access to better education. Debra is a former CCSD teacher and understands clearly just how important it is that every student in Nevada has a great education. John Guedry is division CEO of Bank of Nevada. Mr. Guedry has 38+ years of experience in financial services and related industries in Nevada.

Bank of Nevada, one of Green Our Planet’s earliest supporters, has played a pivotal role in assisting Green Our Planet’s development of a rich and engaging financial literacy program for 5th grade, middle and high school students which culminates in two Giant Student Farmers Markets every year in April and October.

Juliana Urtubey

2021 National Teacher of the Year

Juliana Urtubey is spending this year advocating for a joyous and just education for all students that celebrates their families, identities, and communities. Juliana, a National Board Certified Teacher, is known as “Ms. Earth” for her efforts to beautify schools and unify the community through murals and gardens. She is a special education co-teacher at Kermit Booker Elementary in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Juliana was one of the first and most successful Garden Team Leaders to work with Green Our Planet. Beginning in 2014, she implemented the outdoor garden program at Crestwood Elementary School for 5 years. Juliana created a great example of how to build community engagement at a school using an outdoor garden as Crestwood parents flocked to the school garden to help out every week.

Growing the Next Generation of Leaders

The Secret Garden Party will take place in a secret garden, but it’s no secret to teachers and students at the 300 schools in 15 states Green Our Planet serves that Green Our Planet educates students on how valuable and life changing planting a seed, maintaining a flourishing garden, putting your hands in the soil and harvesting healthy food can be.

We use indoor and outdoor gardens as STEM laboratories where students can learn hands-on science, conservation and nutrition. The gardens are “portals” that help connect thousands of students across the country to the magic and majesty of the universe so that they will join us in protecting life on Earth–including the pollinators, without which most flowering plants would disappear.

With hundreds of outdoor and hydroponic gardens in schools located in low-income neighborhoods around Las Vegas and other cities, we are engaging students in STEM, nutrition and conservation lessons so that we can empower the next generation of scientists, engineers, conservationists, chefs, farmers and entrepreneurs.

The Plight of Pollinators

Our theme this year is “Protect the Pollinators” including the bees whose daily pollinating work provide us with over 30% of all the food we eat. The honey bee’s pollinating work (transferring pollen from one flower to the next) is responsible for pollinating $15 billion in U.S. agricultural crops each year.  Collectively, pollinators in the U.S. pollinate more than fifty billion dollars of crops annually. It’s true what they say about being “busy as a bee!”

But many of our pollinator friends, including the spectacular Monarch butterflies (who carry out the longest migration of any insect on Earth), are endangered. Monarch populations have declined by more than 99% west of the Rockies since the 1980s due to habitat loss and the use of pesticides.

In Las Vegas, however, Green Our Planet, along with the collaboration of some 60 schools, has planted more than 2,000 native milkweed plants–critical food that the Monarchs depend on and where they lay their eggs and reproduce on their way to their wintering grounds in California.

The Menu

Green Our Planet is dedicated to preserving the environment through everything we do.

That’s why each dish served at the Secret Garden Party will be 100% vegan with no animal products. Eating vegan is one of the best ways to live more sustainably since reducing animal agriculture can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water and energy and protect delicate habitats like rainforests and oceans.

The Secret Garden Party’s farm-to-table menu features a fine selection of fruits and vegetables to highlight the dazzling flavors of the spring season.
