World-renowned tennis star Andre Agassi is a record breaker: he’s the only man to have won both the Career Golden Slam and the ATP Tour World Title, along with eight Grand Slam championships and an Olympic gold medal. Now his foundation, the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education, is supporting a record-breaking endeavor of another sort: the largest student-run farmers markets in America, located right here in Las Vegas.
The Agassi Foundation recently announced its sponsorship of the nonprofit Green Our Planet’s signature event: the Giant Student Farmers Market, which is held in Las Vegas twice a year. The student-run markets, where over 600 students gather to sell their school-garden-grown produce to the public, teach students how to turn their school gardens into businesses, transforming the students into “farmpreneurs.”
“The Giant Student Farmers Markets are the culmination of Green Our Planet’s School Garden Program, which uses gardens to teach students about hands-on STEM, nutrition and environmental education,” said co-CEO of Green Our Planet, Kim MacQuarrie. “Students not only learn how to grow their own food, but they then turn their gardens into student-run businesses.”
Green Our Planet’s hands-on program falls right in line with the goals of the Agassi Foundation, which was founded to improve education for students in low-income neighborhoods. In 2018, the Foundation started supporting Green Our Planet to help pilot programs and develop an app to expand its impact on students.
“Green Our Planet’s work in Las Vegas is empowering teachers to use hands-on STEM learning using school gardens and hydroponics to improve student academic achievement,” said Steve Miller, CEO of the Foundation. “We’re excited to continue our partnership and help improve education outcomes for students in southern Nevada.”
