Summer 2019 Recap

Introducing Green Our Planet’s 2019 Team!

Over the summer, Green Our Planet’s team grew with the addition of some very talented and garden-loving people. Get to know our new team members by reading their bios!

Summer 2019 Garden Builds

In June, Green Our Planet built three new school gardens in Las Vegas, Nevada. The PENTA Building Group brought their A-game to build the new garden at Ed Von Tobel Middle School, which PENTA also generously sponsors. A beautiful new school garden now graces the campus of D’Vorre & Hal Ober Elementary School thanks to a sponsorship from the Howard Hughes Corporation. While building the new garden at William E Moore Elementary, Green Our Planet received a helping hand from NFL Quarterback Drew Brees. Thank you so much to the Super Service Challenge and the Brees Dream Foundation for sponsoring the garden program at Moore!

Updated STEAM Garden Curriculum

Together with a cadre of teachers, Green Our Planet’s Curriculum Development team spent the summer creating brand new lessons focused on STEM, nutrition and environmental awareness. The curriculum is aligned to the most recent Nevada State and Next Generation Science Standards, making it easy for teachers to use the garden to teach their standards. The curriculum will go into the pilot phase in fall 2019 and be released in 2020.

New Farmer Lessons for Fall 2019

Along with taking great care of the gardens over the summer, Green Our Planet’s Farmers and the Curriculum Development Team wrote new, exciting lessons for this year’s farmer classes. The lessons were designed to engage students with STEM concepts while showing teachers how to use the garden to teach core content.

Big Harvests

During the summer, Green Our Planet farmers visit their schools to take care of the gardens. An important part of garden maintenance is also one of the most fun: harvesting! Most schools choose to donate their produce over the summer. Our farmers drop the produce off at local food banks and to the USDA Farm to School Program, which uses the produce to provide free summer lunches to students.

Obama Foundation Video

This week, Former First Lady Michelle Obama shared a video featuring Green Our Planet. The Obama Foundation, in partnership with the viral media company ATTN:, created the video to share Green Our Planet’s work with an international audience. The video has now been viewed across the world over 1,000,000 times! Watch it below.
