School Garden Financing
Since Green Our Planet launched in 2013, finding funding for school garden builds and program costs has been one of our priorities. In a 2002 survey of principals at schools desiring gardens conducted by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, school garden financing was the #1 concern.
Recognizing that concern, Green Our Planet has learned to seek out funding for schools in a myriad of ways and has raised millions of dollars for schools in the process. Some of the ways Green Our Planet helps schools obtain funding are
- Helping schools locate and apply for local, state, and national grants
- Soliciting local and national corporations that might be interested in becoming a long-time sponsor for a school’s garden (Thus far, Green Our Planet has successfully connected more than 50 corporations to CCSD schools as sponsors)
- Introducing and lobbying for legislation in the Nevada State Legislature on behalf of funding for school gardens (In 2017, Green Our Planet successfully helped introduce and lobby for Nevada Senate Bill SB-167, which set aside $610,000 for school gardens for the State of Nevada later that year. Nevada was the first state in the U.S. to pass such legislation)
- Using funds allocated to Green Our Planet from foundations to help schools achieve their garden's financial goals
In addition, Green Our Planet helps every school it works with make their school garden programs financially sustainable so that the schools can both maintain and expand their garden programs.
