100+ teachers and community members gather to learn about gardens, hydroponics, STEM, nutrition, and financial literacy education.

Something special happened at WYLEES Middle School in Las Vegas this June.

More than 100 Nevada educators and community members came together for Seeds to Systems, an immersive professional development experience designed to help turn ideas into action.

They came from different schools, backgrounds, and areas of expertise. Some brought years of experience with school gardens or hydroponics. Others were just beginning to explore what these programs could look like in their classrooms. But for a day, they had something important in common: a shared belief that students learn differently when they have the opportunity to experience what they are learning firsthand.

Together, they explored how gardens, hydroponics, STEM, nutrition, conservation, and entrepreneurship can become more than lessons on a page. They can become experiences that students can see, touch, grow, measure, taste, and take ownership of.

And that is where the real power of Seeds to Systems began.

Learning from One Another

Green Our Planet created the space for learning, bringing 13 years of experience in school gardens, hydroponics, STEM, farmers markets, and financial literacy education to the table.

But the day was never meant to be a one-way transfer of knowledge.

The educators who walked through the doors brought their own experiences, questions, challenges, and ideas. They shared what was working in their schools. They talked through problems they were facing. They compared notes, exchanged ideas, and learned from one another.

A teacher who has successfully integrated a hydroponics system into a science lesson can help another teacher see what is possible. An educator who has found a creative way to engage students in a school garden can give someone else a new idea to take home. A community member with experience in nutrition, entrepreneurship, or conservation can offer a perspective that changes how an educator thinks about their own program.

Knowledge grows when it is shared. And when educators leave a room with new ideas and the confidence to put them into practice, that knowledge does not stay in the room.

It travels with them.

From Gardens to Classrooms

School gardens and hydroponics are powerful teaching tools because they make learning tangible.

A student can measure how quickly a plant grows and begin to understand data. They can investigate why one crop is thriving while another struggles and start asking questions about biology and environmental conditions. They can harvest something they helped grow and make a connection between what happens in the garden and what ends up on their plate.

They are learning science, but they are also learning through doing.

That hands-on experience can build curiosity, confidence, problem-solving skills, and a deeper connection to nutrition, sustainability, and the environment.

But there is an important piece of that equation: teachers need to feel equipped to make it happen.

Professional development like Seeds to Systems gives educators the knowledge, tools, and connections they need to bring these experiences into their schools. And when one teacher feels more confident, the impact extends far beyond that individual classroom.

It reaches every student they teach.

Then every student carries those experiences with them, too.

That sense of being part of something bigger is an important part of this work.

Across Nevada and beyond, educators are finding creative ways to use gardens and hydroponics to make learning more meaningful. They are helping students understand where their food comes from, explore STEM concepts through real-world experiences, develop entrepreneurial skills, and see themselves as capable problem-solvers.

Seeds to Systems brought many of those educators together in one place. They were part of a community of people asking the same question: How can we give students more opportunities to learn by doing?

What Happens Next

The most important part of Seeds to Systems happened after everyone went home. More than 100 educators and community members left with new knowledge, new ideas, and new connections. They returned to their schools and communities ready to put what they learned into practice.

And that is where the ripple effect begins. One teacher takes a new idea back to their classroom. A group of students plants their first seeds. Another class begins tracking the growth of a hydroponic crop. Students start asking questions about food, science, money, and the environment.

And suddenly, something that started with one day of professional development is reaching hundreds, then thousands, of students.

Seeds to Systems isn’t simply about teaching educators how to run a garden or hydroponics system. It is about giving them the knowledge and confidence to create experiences that can change how their students see learning—and themselves.

Growing Something Bigger Together

None of this happens without the people who show up.

Thank you to every educator and community member who joined us at Seeds to Systems, asked questions, shared ideas, and brought their own experience to the table. And thank you to the incredible facilitators who shared their expertise, energy, and passion throughout the event.

The seeds planted at Seeds to Systems were not just the kind that grow in soil or hydroponic systems. They were ideas. Connections. New possibilities.

And now those seeds are traveling back into classrooms and communities across Nevada, where they have the opportunity to grow into something much bigger: students who are curious about the world, confident in their ability to solve problems, connected to their food and environment, and excited to learn.

That is how knowledge grows and how change takes root.
