Green Our Planet, Three Square & American Honda Foundation Team Up To Train CCSD Teachers in School Gardens

LifeLab Teacher Training Aug. 18-19, 2014On August 18 and 19th, several dozen Clark County School teachers received training from LifeLab of California in how to teach students in newly-installed Outdoor Garden Classrooms at their schools. The training session was organized by Green Our Planet, using proceeds from a 2014 grant from the American Honda Foundation. 24 teachers from 24 different CCSD schools participated.

The two-day course was the final milestone in a half-year effort spearheaded by Green Our Planet in partnership with Three Square to adapt current STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) lessons at CCSD schools for use in Outdoor Garden Classrooms. The K-5 curricula, in accordance with Nevada State and Next Generation Standards, is the first garden curricula to be developed for all Nevada schools and is now available for the 2014-2015 school year.

Twelve CCSD teachers, two per grade level, along with three horticulturalists from Garden Farms of Las Vegas, developed the curricula, beginning in January of 2014 and finishing in May. Nearly all of the schools funded their gardens by using Green Our Planet’s crowdfunding platform, in addition to grants and local corporate sponsors. In the last year and a half, Green Our Planet has helped fund and build 60 Outdoor Garden Classrooms in the Las Vegas area, including elementary, middle and high schools. During the 2013-2014 school year, Green Our Planet helped 16 of these schools organize and conduct their first, student-run farmers markets, utilizing the vegetables grown in their school gardens.
