Green Our Planet, creators of the nation’s largest school garden program, partnered with Zappos.com to launch the largest student farmers market in the nation on May 4, 2017. More than 300 students from 30 Las Vegas elementary, middle and high schools sold their school garden-grown produce, as well as crafts, to the community. The market was held at Zappos’ downtown Las Vegas headquarters.
According to Casey Korder, a teacher at Parson Elementary School, the farmers’ markets is a great way for students to learn how to run a business.
“At Parson Elementary, we have been using Green Our Planet’s 5th grade curriculum to train our students on how to run their garden as a business. Students analyze their customer base, determine profit and loss, and create advertising campaigns. The curriculum culminates in a farmers’ market, which is normally held at the school, but we are so excited to connect to a wider community through the market at Zappos.”
A Green Our Planet First
Green Our Planet pioneered the Las Vegas school garden movement and organized the first student-run farmers market at John S. Park Elementary School in 2013. The program has taken off. During the 2016-2017 school year, more than 50 schools ran 165 farmers’ markets throughout Clark County.
Zappos has partnered with Green Our Planet in a number of school garden initiatives in the last few years. Steven Bautista, Karma Kommando at Zappos, explained how their company got behind the largest student farmers market.
“Zappos has sponsored the school garden at Sunrise Acres Elementary for two years,” Bautista said. “Our resident artist, Miguel, just completed a beautiful mural at the school. Recently, Zappos employees teamed up with Timberland to sponsor and build a new school garden at Martinez Elementary. We’ve been excited to partner with Green Our Planet again and to give students the opportunity to sell their fruits and vegetables to the downtown community.”
Bank of Nevada also partnered on the largest student farmers market by supply 40 bankers to help train the students on the finer aspects of how to manage and re-invest the proceeds back into their school garden programs.
Largest Student Farmers Market
According to Ciara Byrne, co-CEO of Green Our Planet, the largest student farmers market was a sort of milestone.
“The market is really the culmination of the work of thousands of teachers, hundreds of corporate sponsors and the fact that there is a real, city-wide school garden movement going on in Las Vegas. It’s really just the tip of the iceberg–underneath it are the 75,000 students that now have access to a school garden here in the middle of the Mohave Desert. For all of the students who participated–this is something that they will never forget.”
