Kelley Wright Brings Hands-On STEM Learning to Hope Elementary School’s New Science Lab

Kelley Wright has been such an inspiring member of our Magic Garden Portal community and never fails to cheer everyone on. She also recently experimented with growing wildflowers in her hydroponics—to beautiful success! Read on to learn more about Kelley.

Name | Location: Kelley Wright, Hope Indiana

Hello, I'm Kelley Wright, and I work at Hope Elementary in Hope, Indiana. This is my third year at Hope and my eighth year teaching. This year, I took on an exciting new role overseeing our recently established Science Lab, which serves students from 1st to 6th grade. Collaborating with our STEM lab instructor, our goal is to enrich the Science component of our curriculum.

HydroConnect has been transformative for our school. We have seen tremendous growth, both academically and physically.

When did you know you wanted to become a teacher?

In high school, I had some amazing teachers who supported and inspired me. Their compassion and dedication led me to pursue a career in teaching.

What's your favorite part of your job?

My students. Building relationships and showing them that I care about them and their learning is incredibly rewarding.

What’s your least favorite part?

I don’t enjoy grading.

What brought you to Green Our Planet?

I believe it was God that brought me to my position and led me to Green Our Planet. I was so thankful to receive the grants and the additional $2000 that covered the remaining costs.

What’s the most important skill you've developed on your path as a teacher?

Lesson and unit planning—organizing ideas and finding effective ways to present them to students.

What changes have you seen in your students from using HydroConnect?

I've noticed increased patience, excitement, and acceptance among my students.

What do you want to learn from this community of fellow Green Our Planet teachers?

I want to continue learning how to use gardening to help my students flourish, preparing them for the future by teaching them lifelong skills.
